2017 Georgia Tech professional certificate program in Health & Humanitarian Supply Chain Management
Each year in May, the Center for Health & Humanitarian Systems (CHHS) runs the 6-day certificate program designed for practitioners in non-governmental organizations (NGOs), government, industry, and military who are active participants in humanitarian operations including disaster response, long term development and public health operations.
The 2017 program will be held May 15-20th at the Global Learning Center. Participants will travel to GA Tech from 16 different countries around the world, including Bolivia, Colombia, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Gambia, Haiti, Kenya, Liberia, Libya, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, and the United States, and from organizations across various sectors such as: AIDS Prevention Nigeria, Action Against Hunger International, the Carter Center, Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), Doctors Without Borders (MSF), Emory University's Rollins School of Public Health, FEMA, Last Mile Health, Norwegian Refugee Council, The Red Cross- Gambia, The Global Fund- Haiti, The Task Force for Global Health (TFGH), UNHCR, UNICEF, UN Population Fund (UNFPA), and others. 9 of the participants this year have received scholarships from the generous sponsorship of the UPS Foundation and GT alumn Pete Quinones.
The courses are developed for practitioners seeking to build skills to improve decision making in preparedness, response operations planning, and system design. Courses include many interactive components, such as case studies and games, which help professionals in the health and humanitarian sectors to link the challenges and decision-making tradeoffs they face in practice with the systematic approaches, tools, and techniques presented.
The program consists of three courses: Pre-planning Strategy for Health and Humanitarian Organizations; Tactical Decision Making in Public Health and Humanitarian Response; Systems Operations in Health and Humanitarian Response. It is offered in a 6-day format (2 days per course), enabling participants to earn a certificate in less than a week. Information on each course may be found at links above.
Past participants have reflected on the critical skills in disaster response planning and forecasting learned in the course as well as tools for strategic and tactical decision making. Wendi McAfee, Program Coordinator for the Neglected Tropical Diseases Support Center at the Task Force for Global Health, commented: “The Systems Dynamics framework was incredibly well presented, and has given me not only a new career interest, but also a tool with which to analyze and understand complex problems, including both the problems faced by humanitarian organizations and the problems they create.” Sanne Wijnhorst, Procurement Specialist for Oxfam Novib (Netherlands) also emphasized: “the course really enlightened me in many aspects of the humanitarian supply chain process. The forecasting and decision making tools will provide me with a lot of opportunities to optimize both processes and supply chains.” Finally, the diversity of participants each year, in terms of geographic areas, skill sets, and experiences creates a unique opportunity for new ways of “forming partnerships (formal or informal) for collaboration in the future,” as described by a participant from Village Reach in Mozambique.
2017 course instruction will be led by CHHS Co-Directors and Georgia Tech faculty, Drs. Pinar Keskinocak and Julie Swann, as well as CHHS co-founder and faculty at Northeastern University, Dr. Özlem Ergun. Guest speakers included Ms. Sheereen Brown, Business Analyst at The Task Force for Global Health; Dr. John Bartholdi, Georgia Tech faculty member and supply chain expert; and Dr. Paulo Gonçalves, Academic Director of the Master of Advanced Studies in Humanitarian Logistics and Management (MASHLM) at the University of Lugano, Switzerland.
